About this talk

In this unit, you will learn the key principles of feeding back aptitude test results, focusing on how to conduct effective and ethical verbal feedback sessions. You will be guided through steps such as building rapport, maintaining confidentiality, setting expectations for the session, and explaining test results clearly and objectively. The session also emphasises responding sensitively to candidates’ feelings, using non-judgemental language, and ensuring feedback is a two-way discussion.

After this talk, you will:

• Understand the key principles of giving feedback on aptitude test results.

• Know how to structure both verbal and written feedback sessions for candidates and decision-makers.

• Be able to introduce a feedback session in a clear and friendly manner.

• Appreciate the importance of building rapport and making candidates feel comfortable.

• Recognise the need to explain the length and purpose of a feedback session at the start.

• Understand why it is necessary to take notes during the session and how to do so effectively.

• Be able to reassure candidates about confidentiality and explain how their data will be stored and used.

• Know how to ask about a candidate’s general feelings and experiences related to the test.

• Be able to respond empathetically and appropriately to any concerns or comments from candidates.

• Understand how to explain the relevance of the test and the use of norm or comparison groups.

• Know how to check the candidate’s expectations before giving feedback about their results.

• Be able to deliver results in relation to both candidate expectations and comparison groups, avoiding jargon and judgement.

• Understand how to frame both positive and negative feedback constructively and offer suggestions for improvement.

• Know how to conclude the session, answer questions, and remind candidates about the next steps and confidentiality.

• Appreciate the need for a positive, objective, and two-way style throughout the feedback session.
