About this talk

In this session, you will learn how to handle common questions and behaviours that may arise during psychometric test administration. Dr Graham Tyler explains how to respond to candidates’ queries, manage any deviations from standard procedure, and maintain fairness and proper test conditions. Practical advice is given for both paper-based and computer-based testing, ensuring you can effectively manage the test environment and deal with unexpected issues professionally.

After this talk, you will:

• Know how to respond to common questions and potential issues from candidates during test administration.

• Understand how to handle situations where candidates use materials or methods not allowed, such as their own pen or a calculator.

• Be aware of the importance of treating candidates respectfully and giving clear reasons for your instructions.

• Recognise the need to keep accurate records of any deviations or unusual incidents during the test in the test log.

• Learn how to manage candidates who attempt to open test materials early or continue after time is called.

• Be able to advise candidates regarding breaks, such as visits to the toilet, during or before the test.

• Understand how to support candidates who find example questions difficult while ensuring fairness is maintained.

• Know the correct procedure if candidates ask about scoring, right or wrong answers, or strategies for the test.

• Be able to deal with candidates who wish to leave the test or who declare special requirements, such as dyslexia, on the day.

• Understand how to handle requests for feedback, pass marks, and information about test results.

• Be prepared to manage incidents such as copying, use of mobile phones, or errors on answer sheets.

• Know the differences in handling paper-based, computer-based (controlled), and remote modes of test administration.

• Be ready to ensure all test materials are collected at the end and that no candidate leaves with any testing content.

• Understand your role in maintaining standardisation, security, and fairness throughout the testing process.

• Be aware of your responsibilities for administering psychometric tests in line with organisational and publisher guidance.
