Interim personality assessment report

A talk by Dr Graham Tyler (Consultant Psychologist, PsyAsia International)

About this talk

In this unit, you will learn what an interim report is, why it is important to remain tentative at this stage, and how to begin writing one based on interpreting an identity profile chart. You will also see examples of good and bad practice, with guidance on using appropriate language, structuring your report, and avoiding common mistakes. The unit highlights the importance of confidentiality and setting out your findings clearly while supporting or refuting your interpretations with evidence as you move forward in the process.

After this talk, you will:

• Understand what an interim report is and why it is used in the assessment process.

• Know the importance of being tentative and cautious when preparing an interim report, as it is based only on assessment data and not yet confirmed by meeting the candidate.

• Be aware of the steps involved in moving from an interim report to a final integrated report, including the collection of supporting or refuting evidence in a feedback session.

• Recognise the need to interpret identity profile charts correctly and avoid only reporting scale labels or raw scores.

• Be able to write an interim report by interpreting the candidate’s identity profile chart in a structured way, starting with style scales, then moving on to interpersonal, cognitive, and internal sections.

• Understand why reference groups (norm groups) are used and how to introduce this information appropriately in your report.

• Know the importance of including confidentiality notices and clear statements about the purpose and audience for the report.

• Be able to describe both strengths and development needs in your reporting, avoiding single scale names and instead explaining what the results mean for workplace behaviour.

• Learn common mistakes to avoid when writing interim reports, such as making categorical statements or using technical language that could confuse the reader.

• Appreciate the role of the feedback session in refining assessment findings, and how to prepare for and use this session effectively.

• Be ready to approach interim report writing in a professional, ethical, and helpful manner, providing value both to the candidate and the client.
