Scoring & norming psychometric tests
A talk by Dr Graham Tyler (Consultant Psychologist, PsyAsia International)
About this talk
In this unit, you will learn what happens after a psychometric test has been administered, with a focus on the processes of scoring and making scores meaningful. The main differences between norm referencing and criterion referencing are explained, along with what a raw score is and why it needs to be compared to others or an external standard. You will also be introduced to the steps involved in test scoring and the importance of fairness, reliability, and proper use of norm groups.
After this talk, you will:
• Understand the importance of standardisation in psychometric testing.
• Know what a raw score is and why it is only the first step in interpreting test results.
• Be aware that raw scores alone do not provide meaningful information about a candidate’s performance.
• Recognise the difference between norm referencing and criterion referencing.
• Be able to explain what a norm group is and why it is important to choose the right one.
• Understand that most psychometric tests are used in a norm referenced manner rather than a criterion referenced manner.
• Appreciate why test scoring must be done carefully to avoid errors at every stage.
• Know that there are different ways to transform and present test scores for reporting purposes.
• Be prepared to follow instructions for scoring psychometric tests and submitting your results for assessment.
• Have a basic understanding of why previous research is essential for criterion referencing.
